The Berkeley Carroll Mock Newbery Club is a book group for grades 4-8, formed and facilitated by BCS Librarians in 2009. This year will mark the club’s tenth consecutive year as a cross-divisional, cross-grade reading group for students who enjoy taking on the challenge of reading independently.
The Newbery Medal is a prestigious award given annually to the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The BCS Mock Newbery Club provides an opportunity for students to read and discuss the newest children’s books with other passionate readers. Members are required to examine and evaluate their reading in terms of the criteria for the award and to follow general discussion guidelines.
The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. More information on the award can found here.
